Managed Forests

Lyme Great Lakes Forest Management seeks to enhance both the economic and the ecological attributes of the forests we manage. The property is dual certified to the FSC® and SFI® Forest Management Standards to ensure sustainable management and conservation of the forest resources.

Lyme Great Lakes Timberlands is located throughout the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and in several counties in northern Wisconsin bordering Michigan. The lands are adjacent to acres of protected state and Federal lands and provide landscape scale ecological values.

Forest Management Objectives

  • Forest Health and Diversity: We manage forests to gradually improve overall forest condition and enhance both the economic and the ecological attributes of the forest over time. We manage and sustainably harvest to create species and age class diversity which enhances wildlife habitat and climate resiliency while paying particular attention to protecting soil productivity and water quality.
  • Quality Hardwoods and Softwoods: Sugar maple, red maple, red oak, white and yellow birch, and red pine are among the most economically important species on the lands we manage. The Lyme Great Lakes Forest Management forestry team establishes timber sales and administers the harvesting of the trees which produces pulpwood for papermaking, sawlogs and bolts for lumber production, and specialty logs for veneer markets.
  • Recreational Access: Nearly all the lands are enrolled in the Commercial Forest Program (CF) in Michigan or in the Managed Forest Law Program (MFL) in Wisconsin that allow for public use. If you plan to visit the property, be sure to follow our Recreation Policy and visit this interactive map of our lands.
